Oh My Venus é muito mais profundo do que parece! História do Drama Com 33 anos, Kang Joo Eun conseguiu tudo que queria em sua adolescência ser advogada e manter seu relacionamento duradouro de 15 anos com seu namorado Im Woo Sik. Porém, como nada é lindo como esperado no mundo dos dramas, no dia do aniversário de 15 anos de namoro, Woo Sik decide terminar com Joo Eun também conhecida por Vênus de Daegu, apelido que ganhou na adolescência por causa de sua beleza. O namorado abandona Joo Eun por causa de sua aparência física, que não era mais a mesma da adolescência e, ainda, porque ela era muito bem sucedida em sua profissão, muito mais do que ele. Toda essa situação deixa nossa Vênus abalada e com raiva, pois ela e sua melhor amiga, Lee Hyun Woo, acreditavam que, finalmente, Woo Sik iria pedi-la em casamento. Sem poder aproveitar a fossa de uma forma decente, Kang precisa viajar a trabalho para os Estados Unidos, e então tudo começa a mudar, e, naquele momento, não é possível saber se a mudança é para melhor ou para pior. Por estar sob estresse, e aliado aos seus maus hábitos alimentares, Kang Joo Eun mistura café, algumas bebidas aleatórias e pílulas que sempre toma para emagrecer e ainda faz uso de uma cinta modeladora apertada que pressionada o abdome fazendo-a passar mal durante seu voo de volta para a Coréia. Quem a ajuda é um jovem super gentil, chamado Kim Ji Woong, que vai até a primeira classe pedir para que seu amigo e chefe ajude-o a salvar nossa Vênus. E, assim, somos então apresentados ao nosso personagem principal masculino, Kim Yeong Ho. Depois de ajudar Kang, Yeong Ho percebeu que havia chamado atenção demais com a cena de primeiros socorros e acaba precisando sair escondido do avião, já que ele estava escoltando Jang Joon Seong, um lutador famoso. Joo Eun, para então retribuir o homem que salvou sua vida, os ajuda a escaparem do avião sem serem notados após o pouso. Após chegar à Coreia, Joo Eun estava indo comprar um cafézinho no hotel e acaba reencontrando Oh Soo Jin, uma antiga colega de escola. O plot twist é que Joo Eun quase não reconhece a colega, pois a mesma mudou drasticamente. Antes, a referida mulher era gorda e agora estava magra, dentro dos padrões de beleza esperados, com cabelos curtos e com roupas que nunca teria usado na época de escola. Mas a surpresa não acaba por aí, Soo Jin estava acompanhada do ex-namorado de Joo Eun. Isso mesmo! Woo Sik trocou Joo Eun por Soo Jin – dá-se a entender que foi por causa da diferença na aparência das duas. Daí em diante é ladeira abaixo. Nossa Vênus fica sem reação por causa do choque e, para completar a cena, quando ela tenta dar o primeiro passo para ir embora, o seu salto quebra e ela cai no chão. O ex tenta ajudá-la a se levantar, mas é aí que nosso príncipe, Yeong Ho, entra em ação. Ele aparece em cena tirando Kang Joo Eun daquele momento constrangedor e levando-a para seu quarto que ficava alguns andares acima no mesmo hotel onde estavam. Quando a dupla chega no quarto, Joo Eun reencontra os jovens que a ajudaram no voo. Após uma série de acontecimentos, ela acaba descobrindo que um dos três era o famoso John Kim mas não sabia qual dos três era, um personal trainer misterioso que atuava com celebridades, que tinha a fama de fazê-las ficarem totalmente diferentes ¹segura essa informação que a gente vai usar mais pra frente. O grande X da questão é que ninguém poderia saber quem era o Treinador Kim. Este era um segredo guardado a 7 chaves – uma vez que, na verdade, Kim Yeong Ho era o tal John Kim. Além de personal, Yeong Ho era médico, vinha de uma família rica e muito importante no país. Por isso, precisavam garantir que a mídia não descobrisse sua real identidade, para que sua família não desconfiasse, pois seria mal visto por seus entes. E então a confusão acontece! Claro, porque precisamos de uma confusão. Joo Eun acredita que o John Kim na verdade é o Kim Ji Woong lembra que ela não sabia qual dos três eram o personal!?, o garoto que estava do lado dela no voo, e decide chantageá-lo ou eles a faziam emagrecer ou ela contava para todo mundo o segredo deles. Afinal, depois do trauma do término, ela achava que sua unica chance de ser feliz novamente era sendo magra ²segura essa informação, também, vamos precisar daqui a pouco. Não teve outra, não é mesmo? Os meninos caíram na chantagem, mas não exatamente. Entre eles, resolveram fazer uma tática que, na cabeça deles, seria infalível um treino pesado para que Kang Joo Eun desistisse da ideia maluca de emagrecer. ³Olhá só, eles achavam a ideia MALUCA!! Segura essa informação. E como a gente sempre fala, nada é perfeito. Kang Joo Eun não perdeu nenhuma grama mesmo após treinos pesados, dietas rígidas e acompanhamento contínuo da equipe de John Kim – O que deixa os meninos desconfiados e a levam para fazer exames no hospital, descobrindo, então, que, além dos maus hábitos alimentares, a Vênus tem um problema de saúde hipotireoidismo. Por isso, nada do que estavam fazendo funcionava, deixando-os com peso na consciência. Sabendo da condição de saúde, Joo Eun acaba indo morar na casa dos rapazes para que fique mais fácil de eles acompanharem sua saúde, e assim começa a emagrecer de forma saudável e sempre levando em consideração os limites de seu próprio corpo. O drama, além de focar na questão de alimentação saudável e exercícios para ter qualidade de vida, foca também na questão psicológica. Aborda traumas passados dos personagens, além de um grave problema, tanto de saúde física quanto emocional, de Kim Yeong Ho – Mas se eu contar essa parte para vocês, estarei dando spoiler. Oh My Venus também retrata quadros da vida adulta, como problemas no trabalho, inseguranças profissionais, deficit de inteligência emocional, a luta em correr atrás dos sonhos, o esforço doloroso para esconder do mundo quem você realmente é e as dificuldades de encarar a realidade. Sem contar que retrata a pressão estética pelas quais as mulheres são submetidas e como isso pode ser tóxico. Ao longo da produção, descobrimos o porquê de Kim Yeong Ho ter abdicado de seu posto de comando da empresa de sua família e porque sua relação com os seus entes não é das melhores. E detalhe o ex-namorado e a colega de escola não desaparecem da trama. Segura o coração. Personagens Kang Joo Eun Kang Joo Eun é a nossa protagonista principal, com 33 anos e uma advogada muito boa. Com o ganho de peso, ninguém acredita que ela era a famosa “Vênus de Daegu”, e sofre assédio no trabalho por causa de seu corpo. Por mais que tenha rompido um relacionamento de 15 anos, por escolha do cara, ela continua sendo divertida e acredita que perder peso é o que a fará “dar a volta por cima” – E depois a gente vê que não é bem assim. Kim Yeong Ho Kim Yeong Ho, além de ser personagem principal, é tudo de bom e mais um pouco. Médico, rico, bondoso, gentil, romântico, divertido, e nas horas vagas personal trainer dos famosos. Mas não é só disso que este homem vive. Além de todas essas qualidades, ele precisa enfrentar o destino que está em suas mãos, aprender a lidar com uma frustração do passado e não sabe por quanto tempo conseguirá fugir de compromissos com a empresa de sua família. Jang Joon Sung Jang Joon Sung é um lutador de boxe muito renomado nos Estados Unidos e é treinado por Kim Yeong Ho, mas o relacionamento dos dois vão além do de “mestre-aprendiz” – Joon Sung é visto como um irmão mais novo para o Treinador Kim e junto de seu fiel amigo e escudeiro, Ji Woong, eles moram todos na mesma casa. Além de arrancar doces risadas e suspiros, você também irá se emocionar com a história do rapaz que está procurando sua família biológica. Kim Ji Woong Se prepare para morrer de fofura com esse personagem. Ji Woong é como um staff’ de Joon Sung, mas também é seu melhor amigo. Sendo ótimo em inglês, o baixinho é super bem humorado e o responsável pela aproximação dos personagens principais. Sem contar que ele sempre tenta ajudar a nossa Vênus de Daegu nos exercícios. Ele não é um personagem com história profunda, não sabemos muita coisa sobre a sua vida, mas temos uma certeza os momentos de tela em que ele aparece, só te fará rir – pois aparentemente ele é o respiro cômico da trama. Oh Soo Jin Antiga colega de escola da Vênus, Oh Soo Jin aparece como chefe da personagem principal. Além da sua aparência ter mudado, toda a sua personalidade doce e sensível que tinha quando adolescente foi substituída por uma pessoa má e egoísta, que pensa apenas em si mesma. Im Woo Shik Você vai amar ele nos primeiros minutos do dorama, sério mesmo. Im Woo Shik na sua adolescência era um nadador olímpico muito bom, ganhava sempre medalhas de ouro e era perdidamente apaixonado por Kang Joo Eun. Na noite de comemoração de 15 anos de namoro, ele resolve por um fim em seu relacionamento. Woo Sik aparece sempre para atormentar a vida da sua ex, e, posteriormente, desenvolve um relacionamento com Oh Soo Jin. Análise Critica Sabemos quão preconceituosa são as pessoas quando falamos sobre peso, ainda mais na Coreia do Sul, que possui padrões diferentes dos nossos e ainda mais impossíveis de serem alcançados. Ficamos um pouco receosos quando vemos um drama coreano abordando o assunto “corpo”, principalmente quando alguns k-dramas por aí já foram duramente criticados por tratarem do assunto de uma forma muito perturbadora e errada. Lembra da informação ² que você segurou? Então o que faz “Oh Minha Vênus” ser diferente é que a personagem principal acredita que perder peso vai faze-la voltar a ser feliz, voltar a ter a vida que tinha quando era adolescente – e todos os acontecimentos do drama mostram que ela está totalmente errada. A trama mostra que é necessário encarar nossa realidade, assumir a vida adulta e desenvolver inteligência emocional para saber quando ir ou não atrás do seu passado, e quando é hora de olhar pro futuro e seguir em frente. Agora, puxa aquela informação ³ que eu pedi pra você salvar os novos amigos de Joo Eun mostram pra ela que viver de forma saudável não muda só o corpo dela, mas também a forma como ela encara a vida. Muda o modo como ela vai encarar a própria saúde, e como ela passará a lidar com as pessoas e consigo mesma. Lembra que o Personal Trainer John Kim deixava as celebridades diferentes ¹? Isso não se referia só ao corpo delas, mas à forma de pensar e encarar o mundo. Kim Yeong Ho tinha uma filosofia de vida, e era essa filosofia que ele passava para todos os seus clientes. As pessoas consideravam que Kang Joo Eun tinha uma beleza perfeita na adolescência, todos faziam tudo por ela e a mesma era super respeitada por onde passava, já que era perfeitamente o padrão coreano magra, cabelos longos, pele pálida e covinhas nas bochechas. Joo Eun, que deu seu máximo durante boa parte de sua a vida na carreira de advogada, passa a não ser mais ouvida e reconhecida como a excelente profissional que era, além de sofrer assédios no ambiente de trabalho por causa de sua aparência. Ela começa a receber trabalhos com menos relevância. A trama tem dois focos principais que se misturam a perda de peso de Joo Eun e os traumas de Kim Yeong Ho. Quando dizemos que o drama aborda “vida saudável”, isso se reflete além da parte física. Toca na saúde mental, em como é difícil estar mentalmente saudável quando se é um adulto com problemas profundos enraizados há anos, quando seu valor é diminuído em função de coisas supérfluas, como o formato do seu corpo, e como é difícil se abrir com as pessoas e mostrar suas vulnerabilidades. Além da pegada leve, descontraída e divertida cheia de cenas fofas que rendem boas gargalhadas, a direção soube dosar muito bem as cenas de drama envolvendo a busca de Jang Joon Sung pela sua família, enquanto Kim Yeong Ho queria se esconder de sua própria. A forma como o bullying e o preconceito mudaram a personalidade de Oh Soo Jin, e a busca de Kang Joo Eun em restabelecer sua autoconfiança. Tudo isso faz com que você se apegue aos personagens e queira, cada vez mais, saber o que está acontecendo na vida de cada um. Deseja entender mais sobre a vida do Treinador Kim, saber se um rumor que rolava nos Estados Unidos era verdade. Tenta achar os motivos de Oh Soo Jin ter se transformado em alguém tão diferente, com uma personalidade terrível. E, assim como Joo Eun, nós começamos a encarar a vida de uma forma diferente entender a importância de uma vida saudável em um sentido que vai além do corpo e compreender o termo body-positive, mesmo que superficialmente. Nós mudamos junto com a personagem e isso é incrível. Por mais que o dorama seja todo divertido, mostrando a jornada da personagem principal, precisamos falar de algo muito importante o peso! O drama frisa em todo episódio que ser gordo não te torna feio, que somos muito mais do que quilos numa balança. Percebemos que Joo Eun se ama e se sente a mulher mais linda e sexy do mundo com o seu corpo, mas está cansada de ser rebaixada pelo seu peso. Infelizmente, essa é uma realidade que não passa apenas nos países asiáticos, e nem acontece só na ficção é um problema mundial e real. Quantas pessoas que não se encaixam nos padrões midiáticos sofrem com essa pressão? Ou, então, são subjugadas e invalidadas por causa da aparência? Buscar ser saudável é excelente, mas isso não significa que pessoas que são gordas necessariamente não são saudáveis. No drama, em especial, a protagonista tem uma disfunção hormonal, mas isso não significa que toda pessoa gorda é doente. Temos que levar em consideração nossos biotipos. E atenção, não tente seguir as dietas, exercícios e estilo de vida que é apresentado no dorama. Se você deseja emagrecer, manter uma forma específica ou ficar com sua vida saudável, procure um especialista no assunto – “Saudável” está além do corpo físico!. Vá em nutricionistas, psicólogos, endócrinos e treinadores de confiança. É a sua vida e seu corpo que está em “jogo”, então tome conta dele e escolha muito bem o que fazer com o mesmo. Beautiful Lady mostra muito bem o que retrata no drama “Você é minha dama linda”. O vocal de Jonghyun transmite a sensação de como é assistir cada episódio – leve e divertida. Oh My Venus Episode 16 Recap We start the episode with a replay of the lovely proposal with the ring knitted as part of the scarf, unraveled by Young Ho, Joo Eun accepting his proposal, and Young Ho slipping the ring on her finger as they grant their mutual wish that they be together forever. Our leading man Young Ho So Ji Sub drops our leading lady, Kang Joo Eun Shin Min Ah off at her best friend’s apartment, Lee Hyun Woo Jo Eun Ji. Joo Eun tells Young Ho they’ll live together forever. Young Ho declares the man that dates Joo Eun is a lucky man. Joo Eun can only agree. Hyun Woo is appropriately stoked when she spots the ring Young Ho gave Joo Eun. Darling when Joo Eun declares “Mr. Sexy proposed to me.” The meeting with Young Ho’s Grandmother concerns Joo Eun. They role play the potential conversation between Joo Eun and Young Ho’s Grandmother. Hyun Woo offers Joo Eun a hideous outfit to wear to meet Young Ho’s Grandmother. Grandmother tells Joo Eun other than her hideous outfit, she does not object to Joo Eun in any way. Her only condition, an extravagant wedding gift. In the car Grandmother recalls hearing Joo Eun’s pleas to Young Ho at the hospital when she poured out her heart to Young Ho. Kim Ji Wong Henry tells Jang Joon Sung Sung Hoon that Jang Hee Jin, star of commercials, won a popular star award. Joon Sung doesn’t seem impressed. At the locker room, Hee Jin puts a Samsung Gear S2 watch on Joon Sung. Love the couple picture she put on his watch face. Ah, they have matching watches. Joon Sung doesn’t seem impressed. Frustrated, she says she’s been following him for a year. She likes him, where is the crime in that? Joon Sung tells her he’s interested in her. Hee Jin is thrilled. He kisses her. Young Ho arrives at Joo Eun’s house and finds her in bed. She tells him she met his Grandmother. He is concerned. Joo Eun tells him his Grandmother wants an extravagant wedding gift. Joo Eun suggests they procreate and provide a grandchild. I loved the baby “Arrogant Bastard” stuffed animals she flung at him, too cute! He tries to leave but she deftly pins him. He flips her and says they need to express their love with training. He states once she gets 4 stripes, they will make love. Joon Sung and Ji Wong watch baffled by their method of flirting. Joo Eun is seductive, he refrains from taking her up on her offer though it kills him. When Joo Eun presents him with the 4 stripes belt, he agrees to make love. Joo Eun and Young Ho formally meet Grandmother and Young Ho’s father. Their formal greeting is cut short by Grandmother. Manager Min confirms that Joo Eun overdid the historical greeting and outfit a bit. Joo Eun is nervous and thinks she has indigestion. Young Ho helps her calm down. Joo Eun is baffled that his Grandmother and father are in their respective room and not socializing. She gathers them and sings for them. Young Ho begs her not to. Manager Min cues the music and Joo Eun dances and sings. A record executive is not going sign her to cut a record anytime soon. Young Ho interrupts her performance. Grandmother laughs. Father SMILES!! Father LAUGHS! Joo Eun takes a selfie of the group. At home, Young Ho congratulations her on her weird but effective tactics. They hug happy they will move forward together despite uncertainties life might bring. Oh Soo Jin Yu In Young returns home and stares at the baby booties and engagement ring. Woo Sik stands outside her door but decides not to enter. He recalls his conversation with the doctor, that Soo Jin could have problems conceiving. Young Ho’s Father is at the hospital for his treatments when Young Ho surprises him by visiting and putting away the reports. Father is surprised that Young Ho knew about his condition. Young Ho reviews the reports for his Father and stays with him. His Father thanks him for coming. Father’s wife and other child, Yoon Joon, arrive. Young Ho greets them. Young Ho tells Yoon Joon to call him brother and jokes that he needs to work out. He leaves. I appreciated that Yoon Joon finally got some acknowledgement and kindness from Young Ho. Father tells Yoon Joon to major in medicine. Yoon Joon is stoked to have a crumb of interest from his father and agrees. Young Ho works on Joo Eun’s Mother’s wrist. He recommends she see a doctor. Mother agrees. She tells him with Joo Eun by his side he won’t have a lonely life. They are thankful that Joo Eun is important to both of them. Soo Jin recalls moments with Woo Sik. He declares he loves her and asks her to marry him. She cries. They hug. Interesting location for those scenes. I liked the golden hour lighting. Joo Eun and Young Ho job together. She concerned about the photo shoot. He tells her this will help. They decide to race. Joo Eun floors the boys, Manager Min and Young Ho with her red poka dot dress and crown for their engagement photo. How fun, the photo shoot is all of them, of course with couple photos too. This is fun filler! We get greatest hit moments for all our characters. 6 months later… Joo Eun arrives at the airport. Marine Ji Wong greets her. Young Ho and Joon Sung greet her. He is stunned to find out she is expecting. He hugs her thrilled. She’s three month along. He’s concerned about the amount of weight she’s gain. TWINS! He declares they need to exercise. He tells her she needs to slim down to fit into her wedding gown. She tells him not to worry, this is what she looks like now. Her face is fuller so her dimple isn’t there. He tells her they must exercise. Joo Eun and Young Ho depart together. Flashback to the wheelchair Young Ho as a child and the youth Joo Eun putting a bandage on his cast and encouraging him to fight and get stronger. Ah…they met at a young age and connected then too. We end the series with flashbacks of their best moments ending with them hugging. My Thoughts * Another sweet episode that provided the closure and a happily every after for our couple. I’ve used the word sweet many times in my recaps of this series. But that word applies to many of the characters. Joo Eun is sweet, Young Ho is sweet, Joon Sung is sweet, Ji Wong is sweet, etc. This series had a soft, fun, vibe. There was little doubt that our couple was right for each other. Once they realized it, they were all in. I appreciated the lack of typical obstacles to our couple’s happiness. The single episode Young Ho accident and solo recovery was their biggest obstacle, and they handled it better than I did. While I enjoyed that last two episodes, they were clearly victory laps, full of filler. This series could have been shortened by at least 1 if not 2 episodes. * Young Ho and Joo Eun supported and cared for each other. They were fun to watch. Their banter was superb. I’m a sucker for fun banter between a couple, and they had many wonderful moments. They had a playful aspect to their relationship that was created and sustained throughout the series by the lead actors. They are an enjoyable couple. * Joon Sung and Ji Wong had closure too. Ji Wong was finally a marine and Joon Sung finally admitted he liked Hee Jin and kissed her. These two were superb secondary characters. The writer could have given them more screen time and story, they were charming, kind, and lots of fun. Bravo to the actors that made these characters sparkle. * Soo Jin and Woo Sik resolved their issues and decided to marry. I’ve been upfront that this couple was a bore in the first half of the series. Once Joo Eun and Soo Jin talked about and dealt with their issues, that allowed Soo Jin to drop the jealously and bitchy treatment of Joo Eun. That was the turning point for Soo Jin with me. Woo Sik came along for the ride. He never did much for me. * How did the writer do with my final episode wishes? + Grandmother’s approval for our couple – GRANTED + A kiss between Joon Sun and Hee Jin – GRANTED + A cute moment for Ji Wong – GRANTED + A truthful conversation between Soo Jin and Woo Sik. – GRANTED, kinda + A smile from Young Ho’s father -GRANTED, with a bonus laugh + A girl for Manager Min – NO, but I’ll accept the cute photo shoot he participated in as a substitute. We don’t get all the answers we’d like, but when is life ever perfectly tidy like that? But that’s not to say that the show doesn’t have a surprise or two left for us, as we say goodbye to our adorable couple and their sweet little self-made family. EPISODE 16 RECAP Young-ho reveals that Joo-eun has been carrying her own engagement ring in her scarf ever since he gave it to her, and proposes to her. She nods her yes, and they hug, both of their wishes coming true at once. Later Joo-eun stares at her ring, though she tells Young-ho that the real gift was the scarf. You can buy a ring anywhere, but he made this scarf just for her. I love that she gets how meaningful that is for him. Young-ho drops her off at Hyun-woo’s so she can flash her ring at her friend, and he starts to warn her about his family. But Joo-eun stops him and says they’ll take things one step at a time. She assures him that she plans to live with him forever, so nothing anyone can say will change that. Joo-eun pretends to have a headache, holding her beringed hand to her forehead, and of course Hyun-woo sees her new ring right away and shrieks excitedly. Best friend ever. Joo-eun can admit to her friend that she’s nervous about meeting Grandma, so Hyun-woo role-plays the worst stereotypical chaebol grandmother ever, to get Joo-eun pumped up. Joo-eun has her dial it back a bit, and this time it’s more helpful, though Hyun-woo bails when Joo-eun mentions her dead father. Ha, her advice is to give Grandma some spending money, based on her interactions with her own mother-in-law, but that’s a bad idea for obvious reasons. At work in the morning, Joo-eun gets a visit from Joon-sung’s mother, with a gift of some pretty white mittens. Joo-eun asks how her husband is these days, and it sounds like he’s in prison but doing well there, and even wants to make amends with Joon-sung’s mother when he gets out. Joo-eun suggests counseling, and they talk about how happy Joon-sung seems these days. Young-ho visits Woo-shik at work, here to get up to speed before he goes back to work soon. He asks if Woo-shik had a lot of injuries when he was a swimming star, and Woo-shik says that’s why he eventually retired. He tells Young-ho that he did his physical rehab in Japan, France, and America, which prompts Young-ho to pull out a set of plans. He wants to build a new rehab center in Korea, which Woo-shik knows the directors will fight against. That’s why Young-ho is here, to ask for Woo-shik’s support on this project. He admits that he doesn’t fully trust Woo-shik yet, but as a fellow athlete who’s been through similar health challenges, he wants to mend fences and team up. Young-ho asks after Uncle, and we see Uncle playing a board game with another man when he gets a text from Young-ho. He asks to see him at the company, which surprises Uncle, but he looks pleased. Joo-eun nervously arrives to meet with Grandma, psyching herself up before entering the dining room. The mood is tense as both women size each other up, and Grandma reaches for her purse. But Joo-eun quickly grabs an envelope, and asks Grandma to accept hers before offering her one presumably full of money to entice her to leave Young-ho. She says that it’s not money in her envelope, but her blood test results proving that she no longer suffers from hypothyroidism. She says respectfully that no matter how much money Grandma offers, or how much she objects to their relationship, she won’t ever leave Young-ho. Grandma nods knowingly, and says that with age, one becomes stubborn. She reaches for her purse again, but instead of an envelope of money, she pulls out a handkerchief to wipe her mouth. Joo-eun looks like she’d like to crawl under the table, ha. Grandma says that, other than her outfit a hideous creation Joo-eun borrowed from Hyun-woo, she has no intention of objecting to anything. It’s hilarious how Joo-eun jumps up to apologize her her outfit. Grandma does have one condition, and that’s that she wants a really extravagant wedding gift. Okay, she’s not so bad, and I see where Young-ho gets his dry sense of humor. We see that Grandma witnessed Joo-eun’s tearful speech outside Young-ho’s hospital room a year ago, which was enough to convince her of how much Joo-eun loves her grandson. Joon-sung is flustered to hear that Yi-jin received an award, and said, “I love you, JJS,” in her acceptance speech. Ji-woong teases him mercilessly, making it even worse, ha. So when Yi-jin next pops up in his locker room, Joon-sung can only grumble and look embarrassed when she gives him a watch with their faces on it. Yi-jin grabs him and demands to know why she’s been chasing him for a year, when he doesn’t like her as much as she likes him I think we’d all like to know that, sweetheart. For the first time, Joon-sung calls her by her name affectionately, and says in his roundabout way that he is interested in her. That’s all she needs to hear, but she still looks surprised when he gives her a little peck, then backs her up against a locker for a longer kiss. Joo-eun invites Young-ho to her place that night, but the house is dark when he arrives. He finds her sitting on her bed with a serious air about her, and she moans dejectedly that she met his grandmother today. Hee, she’s totally faking him out. Young-ho falls for it and offers to go talk to his grandmother, but she says that he can’t fix this problem. Grandma wants a super-expensive wedding gift ~giant sigh~. Young-ho actually does a double-take, and Joo-eun rips open her robe to reveal a sexy teddy. She holds up a pair of baby You Bastards and suggests a really expensive wedding gift — great-grandchildren. Young-ho is shocked, and it’s Joo-eun’s turn to flip him over and straddle him. She mentions that she’s been studying jiu jitsu and has three stripes, but Young-ho quips that she needs four to beat him. And then he flips her right back, suggesting other ways to express their love. Cut to him showing her some new jiu jitsu moves, hee. Joon-sung and Ji-woong watch from the doorway, wondering what they’re doing Ji-woong “I think they’re flirting.” Smart boy.. Joo-eun is determined to convince Young-ho to make a baby, tossing the little stuffed sloths at him and flashing skin at every opportunity. Young-ho is mighty tempted, but insists on four stripes before he’ll consider it. Joo-eun stomps off to beat up You Bastard, poor thing, while Young-ho looks like this is killing him. Eventually he caves, because he’s human, after all. They finally go to meet his family officially, and wow, Joo-eun looks radiant in hanbok. Joo-eun starts to formally bow to Grandma and Young-ho’s father, and her face is priceless when Grandma is all, Let’s just eat. Even Manager Min looks like he’s choking back a laugh, and Young-ho asks dryly if she’s filming a sageuk. HAHA. Joo-eun gets a nervous stomach, so Young-ho massages a pressure point in her hand. She asks if the house is always this quiet, and Manager Min helpfully informs her that it’s quite noisy today, since they have a guest. HAHAwhoops. Joo-eun is confused as to why Grandma and Dad both just went to their rooms after she arrived, though nobody else seems to think that’s strange. Joo-eun can’t accept this as normal, and confirms that she’s been accepted as part of the family, then gets a look in her eye that makes both Young-ho and Manager Min squirm. She drags Grandma and Dad out to the living room, and proceeds to sing a song for them. Now it’s Young-ho’s turn to want to crawl under the table. He finally jumps up and makes the horror stop, and he begins to apologize to his family, but Grandma starts laughing so hard she can’t even breathe. Her guffaws get Dad started, and even Manager Min looks pretty amused. Joo-eun thoroughly charms Young-ho’s family, and even gets them to pose for a group selca Young-ho “Manager Min, it’s not an ID photo.” ~snerk~. It’s only later that Joo-eun wonders if his family thinks she’s weird, and Young-ho calls that a solid Yes. But he’s never seen his Grandma or Dad laugh like that. He turns serious and starts to say something, but Joo-eun already knows what he’s thinking. He’s scared to have kids, because he doesn’t want to pass on a genetic predisposition to cancer. Young-ho tells her that when he was young, he blamed his father for making him go through so many surgeries and suffer so much pain. He promised himself that he’d never live like his father did, but now he realizes that it was more that he doesn’t have the heart to. Joo-eun says that she’s been doing research, and the chances of passing on the disease are low. But Young-ho knows that even a small chance is terrifying. The child and the parents suffer, and he doesn’t want to put her through that. But Joo-eun is optimistic, and willing to at least try their best. She paints a picture of a son and a daughter, and tells Young-ho how she wants to watch them grow up, and complain about their father, and hear them call him “Dad.” Young-ho looks touched, and finally concedes defeat. She asks if he wants a son or a daughter, and suggests twins. Woo-shik is still leaving porridge for Soo-jin at her place, and she’s still ignoring it. But she’s kept her engagement ring, and the baby booties he bought, and looks at them longingly. Woo-shik comes back, knowing she’s home, and debates whether to let himself in. Ultimately, he decides against it. He’d gone to her doctor and confirmed her diagnosis, and he spends long hours trying to think what to do. Young-ho visits his father in the hospital while he’s undergoing treatment for his own cancer, and Dad asks how he knew. I love Young-ho’s answer “I’m supposed to know. I’m your son.” The two sit quietly, needing no more words than that. When Young-ho gets ready to go, Dad offers a quiet thanks. Stepmom and Young-joon arrive to visit, and when Young-joon addresses him formally, he corrects him to “hyung.” Young-ho leaves, and Dad tells Young-joon that he should major in medicine. It seems backwards, but all Young-joon ever wanted was for his father to show interest in him, so the paternal guidance makes him happy. Young-ho visits Joo-eun’s mother alone to look at her wrist, suspecting that she suffers from carpal tunnel syndrome. He gives her some tips on home care but tells her to see a doctor, and she promises to obey. Mom says that she knows he was sick when he was young, and tells Young-ho that it’s better to be sick when you have someone around. He thanks her for giving birth to Joo-eun, and for giving him permission to marry her. Soo-jin thinks back on all of her interactions with Woo-shik, going all the way back to her college days when she was overweight and he was kind to her. Woo-shik is also thinking of her, and he finds her where she’s walking and puts his coat around her shoulders. He asks if she’s okay, and makes his last apology to her. He says he’s sorry for being a selfish person, but he loves her, and wants to marry her. Overcome, Soo-jin just cries on his shoulder — but Woo-shik smiles, knowing that this is a yes. While Woo-shik and Soo-jin walk through fields making moony eyes at each other, Young-ho and Joo-eun naturally go for a jog together. Joo-eun complains as usual, and Young-ho jokes for her to watch it, because he hasn’t decided if he’s going to let her live with him or not. The boys including Manager Min suit up for a photo shoot together, and they all gape at Joo-eun in her sexy red dress. Young-ho is obviously smitten, though he does tease that she’s supposed to be wearing white for this. The photo shoot looks fun, though Manager Min gets stage fright in front of the camera and has to be tickled to smile. It’s so sweet how Ji-woong and Joon-sung take him under their wings like family. Young-ho and Joo-eun even change into their jiu jitsu uniforms and pose for pictures while grappling on the floor. Cute. After an alarming amount of flashbacks, we skip to the summer of 2016. Joo-eun arrives at the airport to meet her boys as they return from various out-of-town jaunts. Aww, Ji-woong finally made it into the Marines, and he salutes Joo-eun before pouncing on her with his famous attack-hug. He looks great in uniform. Prior to getting married, Young-ho flew to give assistance to people in a flooded area, and he’s just now returning for the wedding. When he calls out to Joo-eun, she turns and we finally see her face — which has filled out with the weight she gained while he was gone. HAHAHA, his face is priceless. Joo-eun beams at her husband-to-be, and opens up her coat to show a ribbon tied around her belly. She’s not overweight, she’s pregnant! Young-ho stares for a moment before a gorgeous smile spreads over his face, as he realizes he’s going to be a daddy. And not only that, but it’s twins! Of course, the pregnancy means that Joo-eun has gained back all the weight Young-ho helped her lose, and it makes Young-ho worry for her health even as he’s thrilled to pieces at the news. Ji-woong and Joon-sung are ecstatic at the prospect of being uncles. Young-ho is ready to start her new exercise regimen right away, though Joo-eun protests that it was the babies eating all that food, not her. He worries about her fitting into her wedding dress, but Joo-eun reminds him that Venus is the goddess of beauty and fertility. As they leave the airport together, one big happy family, Joo-eun says in voiceover that among all the men in Korea named Kim, the name Young-ho is pretty common. “It seems very ordinary, for all coaches who exist, especially you…” Young-ho joins in with, “For the wicked and risky Venuses in this world…” and together they finish “Now boarding to outside of your world. Departure!” Epilogue A young Young-ho sits in his wheelchair outside his home soon after surgery, his leg propped up in a cast. A girl walks near and stops, asking if his leg hurts. He nods, and he pulls a bandage out of her pocket and puts it on his cast. She tells him that it won’t hurt anymore and to trust her. Little Young-ho asks how she knows, and she says that if you believe you can do something, then you can. Young-ho nods, then smiles tentatively at little Joo-eun. COMMENTS Well, that was cute, though ultimately unnecessary. Did we really need to see them meet as children for thirty seconds just to believe they’ll live happily ever after? Can we not just have one drama where the main couple didn’t meet as children and thus are Fated To Be? Oh well, at least it was a small scene, and not part of the overall story. Oh My Venus definitely had its share of plot holes, odd editing choices, and continuity issues, of which I could name many that bugged me as a viewer. Such as Joo-eun planning to spend all of Christmas Day with Young-ho, only leaving to spend time with her mother who showed up unexpectedly. Then she immediately goes to a work meeting that hadn’t previously been mentioned. And how about Joon-sung’s mother talking about her son’s girlfriend, before Joon-sung ever tells Yi-jin that he likes her back? And don’t even get me started on the whole Yi-jin issue… just UGH. It’s not cute just because she’s a girl, it’s still stalking, and several things she did bordered on sexual assault. I found it quite disappointing that a show that spoke out against women being sexually assaulted, had a main male character receiving repeated unwanted sexual advances from a woman, and it being played off as adorable. There were several examples of this kind of thing throughout the drama, and occasionally it took me out of the story because I was too busy wondering what was happening and why it made no sense. And while the main love story between Young-ho and Joo-eun was wonderfully mature, both emotionally and physically, I felt as though the secondary characters’ relationships mostly came across flat. Particularly Woo-shik and Soo-jin — there was such a wealth of plot to be mined from their courtship that just got left by the wayside. I would have loved to see Soo-jin’s journey be more about loving herself, than about finding a man to love her. Not that being loved by someone else is bad, but it creates a dissonance when Joo-eun’s whole character was based on her self-confidence and the fact that she didn’t need a man. So why was Soo-jin left to flounder in insecurity and depression until her white knight showed up to rescue her? I love a romantic happy ending as much as the next person, but in my opinion, Soo-jin needs to do a lot more personal work before she’s ready for a relationship. But regardless, my main takeaway is of a cute, sweet love story, and there’s no doubt we got that in spades. Young-ho and Joo-eun’s romance was always respectful, always loving, and always honest. Not to mention their crackling chemistry, and adult way of discussing sex and their mutual attraction. And through her loving example, Young-ho was able to heal many of his family’s wounds, which was nice to see. They were never bad people except for Uncle, it’s just that they didn’t know how to relate to each other. Even with just the tiny tentative beginnings of baby steps, you can see that they’ll all be just fine. Not to mention the beautiful symmetry in the two families that have merged, that Young-ho now has a mother, and Joo-eun has a new father. This drama never promised a complicated plot, and really, I don’t think it needed one. In many ways, the simplicity of the plot of Oh My Venus is one of its biggest draws and greatest charms. Though there were bigger messages there, such as the benefits of healthy living, domestic abuse, and violence against women, it never got bogged down or became preachy. Those were just issues the characters were dealing with as they lived their lives, but the show was never about those things. Keeping these issues present but on the periphery allowed the show to have a lightness that was refreshing, while still touching on important issues. In a different show I might find this a weakness, and some viewers may still feel that way. But for me, I came here to see a sweet romance with fun chemistry between the leads, and that’s exactly what I got. Serious issues and chaebol machinations aside, this drama was always about the romance between two people who needed each other, and it delivered that beautifully.
